Okay. I live in springfield and i notice the way most people here act towards hispanic people. I hate it. But really there is nothing that can be done about the racism that lurks here. Even the police here are that way. I have a mexican flag hanging in my windshield and there are no telling how many times i have been pulled over for nothing really and i can bet its because of that. Also if your hispanic here with a nice vehicle they swear your a drug dealer. I have actually been with a friend of mine, gotten pulled over, and we were asked [for no reason] to step out of the vehicle so they could serach it. And afterwards the police officer asked him how did he ever get a truck like that? WHAT? come on!!! But back to the park thing.. it will never happen here. Hispanics will never be banned from the park.. people are stupid for thinking that it might. And if i am wrong and one day it does happen.. so what? We’ll have get togethers in out own back yards.. jajaja..

I grew up in Springfield and I must say it use to be such a pretty place. When I moved back to Robertson County in 2003 after living in Germany (where I had to learn how to speak german!!!!) for years…well the first thing I said to a family member was what the hell happened to this place. It was dirty, mexican stores on every corner, and please dont even get me started on the job loss to the cheap labor. I know what you read must make all of us sound like bad monsters that just want to string up some mexican at our courthouse, but its not that way what so ever. These people moved here wanting a better life. Well thats great! My Grandmother was 100 percent Irish. Her family came here for the same reason. Instead of making a better life for themselves they have moved in trashed out our town, most get public assistance, took our jobs, and we are all feed up with it.

Without drudging through details or pointing fingers at either side, there have been many ill intended and well intended failures on every level of all parties involved.

We ‘Gringos’ have greedily allowed illegal workers because it’s cheap labor and it boosts cashflow in our communities. The legal immigrant population has been remiss in separating itself from the illegal population. The illegal immigrant population (and I’m not limiting this to Hispanics, as there are legal and illegal Turks, Africans, etc. here, as well) have abused the system in both minor and major ways for personal gain at the expense of others.

These things have occurred in every race and society since the beginning of time. Why would we think it wouldn’t happen in the Good Ol’ US of A? Poor planning and greed caused this failure mode. We have forced ourselves to have to react to a situation that we have played a major hand in causing. Again, history repeating itself.

I do think illegal immigrants should not be allowed to stay. I think the legal immigrants should try to assimilate with their adopted new homes (were I to move to Mexico would I not be expected to learn Spanish?). I think the ‘natives’ here should be open to the infused cultural blending of our new potential citizens. We should be more welcoming and less fearful. These things are probably too much to hope for.

Nevertheless, as I’m of Native American descent, I think I can speak somewhat objectively and say that immigration has been a problem to deal with for about 400 or so years. It was less of a problem when there were millions of miles of open space. Now that we are a more compact society the problem has increased.

A few hundred years ago it was like: “Sure, come on down…we have corn and tobacco, you got whisky?…please leave your diseases at home (they seem like nice Englishmen…surely they have no bad intent).” Now it’s more like: “Um….We’re kind of out of room here (we brought all our friends with us and relocated our hosts to this wonderful resort area called a reservation (no reservations required)…so we have to have many, many rules to manage keeping the immigrants out (unless it profits us) so that immigrants won’t do to us (Aztlan and stuff) what we did to our hosts hundreds of years ago (posession is 9/10ths of the law, you know).

Wow, kinda got on a rant there.

Bottom line: we are in the position we are in because, as a majority, people of all races are short-sighted, greedy bastards on the base level.

It’s the idiot advocay groups that started all of this mess! Damn them!! Hispanic-anglo relations were fine until some amigos in California tried to exploit the immigration issue for their own political gain. While most Hispanics were calling for a guest worker program and amnesty, there are a few nuts out there screaming about Aztlan and taking back California and parts of the U.S. You don’t think that the anglos are going to freak out when they hear that stuff and see Mexican nationals on TV carrying flags of the homeland? This hate you speak of is partly of our own doing!!!!

Living in Phoenix, I have experienced firsthand how Hispanics like to take over the parks and practically intimidate any one else from using the same public space. Parks were once a refuge in the city; now they’re extended backyards for people who have no respect for the environment or the culture in which they have inserted themselves.

yof: I was born here in this country and I speak both English and Spanish. I was always under the impression that in this country we had the right to speak whatever language we wanted to. Newspapers were printed in many different language and so were government publications. You may want to go back and check your immigration history before bashing anyone for speaking a language other than what you speak. What you also seem to forget is that by having people speak more than one language also helps this country by making it more competitive in the global economy.

As to your assumption that I or anyone else is “sneaking” anyone into this country you are wrong. My family was also born here and have been here for several generations.

What I do object to is broad-assumptions by those who simply do not choose to examine history or facts. I also object to those who would make assumptions about an enitre group of people. That is just plain wrong.
