Well, it should be easy to get draftees, what with the economy and the wall.

But as with Iraq, repression will beget resistance. In the past, it was the Mexican government against a few stray leftists. But now the indigenous population is aroused, bridges have been built past racial barriers, and Calderon has managed to destroy any sense of his own legitimacy. It looks to me like a high speed train wreck filmed in slow motion.

That was a very good piece, thanks for sharing. I was debating about writing about the whole NAFTA based on a a comment Ana Maria Salazar wrote on her blog regarding the military. I decided to leave it out because I felt it should have a post of its own. Now with the editorial you shared, it is all making sense now.

Considering that the US has now lost another country to another so-called "leftist" regime now that Daniel Ortega won his election, guarding the North Western Hemisphere is now becoming a priority. Part of finalizing "NAFTA Plus" otherwise known as the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America is that Mexico is to control the migration flow from Guatemala and Central America into Mexico by militarizing their Southern borders. According to Ana Maria Salazar, it looks like Calderon is serious about beefing up Mexico's military.

Good synopsis on the cabinet, XP. But I think there's a lot more juice on the bone regarding that midnight ceremony. La Jornada did an editorial that conveyed the vampiric nature of the scene, a rough translation of which might be:

Ominous mutilation. Last midnight, Fox and Calderon starred in an ominous and strange nocturnal ritual. It marked the end of office for the first but was not a formal taking on of office by the second. It was done in private, but disseminated by national chain. It pretended civility but had a marked military flavor. It was completely unnecessary but appeared to be forced by circumstances. It followed legal forms but was not foreseen in the laws. It was a demonstration of fearful weakness but constituted an unmistakable threat of force...

Good synopsis on the cabinet, XP. But I think there’s a lot more juice on the bone regarding that midnight ceremony. La Jornada did an editorial that conveyed the vampiric nature of the scene:

Ominoso desfiguro

Thanks it is getting there, it is just the little things I am still taking off right now. So it more like a work in progress.

It will be interesting to see what will happen to Mexico in the next 6 years.
