New Theme - Aztec Sunrise

Hi all, as you can tell I have redone the entire site with a theme I designed myself. I call it Aztec Sunrise, something that came to me in a dream. I think I have been spending too much time reading somebody’s blog. ;) Speaking of that person, I do like to thank Nezua for the cool banner he designed (over a month ago *blushing*) and the background.

There are still some kinks I do have to work out. When I developed this theme, I did it on a new version of WordPress - WordPress 2.1 Ella, however, I am still using an older version of WordPress 2.0.7 on this blog. The reason I haven’t upgraded to the new version yet, it is not that simple, since this blog contains a lot of Spanish letters with accent marks. Believe me it is a pain in the ass to re-do all the gibberish. Lucky for I have a sandbox to test out my experiments.

So in the time, please provide some feedback - such was what you would like to be added, fixed, or tweaked for your reading pleasure.

I like it muchly. :) The background looks awesome, and so does the banner.

Much more readable… for some reason XP ver 2.0 (the first wordpress version) always pushed the center text way down the screen). Hey, if you can overcome the accent mark problem (as well as the ¿ and ¡ and ñ problem), maybe I’ll join ya.

This is a great-looking theme. Also, I like how you kept it relatively uncluttered, which add readability.

As for the name… didn’t the Aztecs used to carve out people’s hearts at sunrise?

Sylvia - Thank you! the idea for my background came from George Yepes. You can see the face only the comments. Because of my limited knowledge regarding photo manipulation, I had asked Nezua for assistance.

Manny - Thanks! Don’t worry about it, I totally knew what you were saying. I hope you had a great time at DC. I wish it was only CSS, but unfortunately it also includes WordPress’s “template tag,” which I see it altered my sidebars when I ported the theme over here. There are other things I would have included and probably will include later on, once I get a handle on how to do it.

Richard - Thank you! I’m sorry about the center text problem. I saw that problem when I was working with my parent’s new laptop. The problem with accent marks has to do more with the encoding settings on MySQL and PHP. I have found out that is a major problem with out people too. When I transfered everything from Blogger to Wordpress, that is when my problems really began. I suddenly started seeing a load of junk instead of my accented characters, which probably happened to you too.

The default encoding for MySQL connection setting is set to Swiss latin-1, but WordPress and every blogging software requires us to use a UTF-8 setting. What makes it worse, is if you do a particle correction instead of correcting everything. Right now, on my test blog, I have taken care the database setting, however, instead of seeing gibberish that replaced the accent marks, I see literally “?”. I have found how to fix it after hours of going through google searches. This person developed a code on correcting everything, the only problem, I have to figure out how to implement it.

gordo - Thank you. When I started out on WP, that was my original intention and Len did offer to help. I was really close in taking it, but I decided to I really decided I really needed to do it myself. So I decided to find a simple theme to modify instead of trying to hit out of the park.

I am more of a tactile learner, I just needed to set up my own sandbox to test things out. The only problem I have now, is understanding how to manipulate all those WP template tags.

No wonder why I am such an early riser. If the Aztecs had to wake up before sunrise in order to crave people’s hearts at sunrise, maybe that explains why I wake up so damn early…..lol

Thanks Luisa! I thought that was the prefect definition for libertad for this blog. I wanted the actual quote in Spanish not the literal, but I could not find.

¡Ululación! ¡Es magnífica! (I hope I didn’t just swear at you…but at least I didn’t “compliment” you by saying that you “kiss ass” (sorry, Manny) :D :D :D

Outstanding, XP - you clearly put your heart into this and it shows! (Oh dear…just one more thing for me to worry about…your heart and those darn Aztecs…) ;)

As a point of feedback…I really liked the rich colors from your last blog….and the colors on this one kind of make me sad. (and, for those of us who are always unsure of ourselves…a preview screen would be much appreciated.)

Well done, mi amigo - well done!

P.S. (Just to clarify…I was merely referring to the gray background when I mentioned my sadness) You have a powerful voice, and it needs a powerfully colored background to go with it. (And brown faces on the emoticons would be an added plus) :)

anomalous - Thank you! As for the background, I don’t know what happened there. I had a different setting and somewhere between the move from my test blog to this one it changed. I am still working on that one the comment preview, I do like that feature. I think I can do something about the smiley. :)

When it comes to hearts and me, the only thing one has to worry about is the trail of digital broken hearts I have left. ;)
