Rest in Peace Molly Ivins
I’m sad to say that another Texas icon has passed away, the first was Ann Richards. Texas native and best-selling author and syndicated columnist Molly Ivins has passed away after an enduring battle with breast cancer. According to David Pasztor, managing editor of the Texas Observer, Ivins died at her home while in hospice care. Ivins was 62.
Like Ann Richards, Molly Ivins was also a spitfire from Texas. Ivins was best known for her populist humor and strong liberal views, but for me it was because she was a straight shooting political writer. Ivins has a critical eye on American politics and she wasn’t afraid to tell it like it is, regardless if the person was a Democrat or Republican. In fact, she had warned everybody about “Dudya” or as she called him “Shrub” in her book she co-authored with Lou Dubose, Shrub: The Short but Happy Political Life of George W. Bush.
She was a progressive populist and she and she reserved her witty critiques for the deep pocket elites who had endless dough - and the power that goes with it. She doesn’t cotton to politicians who carry the water for Big Oil, High Finance and the Military-Industrial Complex. Give her enough rope and she strung those bastards up. And because of that, she often was the target of vitriolic attacks, mostly from the right because as Ivins once put it, “It’s like, duh. Just when you thought there wasn’t a dime’s worth of difference between the two parties, the Republicans go and prove you’re wrong.” Molly Ivins has been a major inspiration to me because she didn’t write what people wanted to read. She wrote the truth about our current corrupt system run by the good ole boy network of legislators and executives that pass as leaders in this country.
There is one thing I really admire about Ivins, she was true fighter for social justice to end. She never gave in to her cancer, she continued to make public appearances and when she was too weak to write, she dictated her columns. Her last column, Stand Up Against the Surge, Ivins forcibly requested us to get involved to put a stop to Bush’s plan to send more troops to Iraq.
We are the people who run this country. We are the deciders. And every single day, every single one of us needs to step outside and take some action to help stop this war. Raise hell. Think of something to make the ridiculous look ridiculous. Make our troops know we’re for them and trying to get them out of there.
I will miss her dearly. May the angels accompany you into heaven, rest in peace, Molly Ivins.

Molly was a lunatic lefty socialist commie pinko bitch. I’m so pleased she has assumed room temp!! YAY!!!!
I hate learning so much about wonderful people after they’ve left us.
Guess we’re left to raise hell; it’s the very least we can do.
I grew up in Arizona, and for a long time it seemed that the only voices on the left were west coast flakes and east coast academics.
Thank goodness for Molly Ivins, the original Southwestern Liberal. Someone who actually understood what it’s like to grow up surrounded by rednecks and yahoos, and who would speak up and expose their bigotry and stupidity.
I’m really going to miss her.
One other thing: notice how she could provoke such an over-the-top reaction from idiots like Fred. Guys like that can ignore liberals like Nicholas Kristof and Michael Kinsley. But Ivins always scared them a little, so she could always get a rise out of them.
Fred - thanks for proving Ivins’ point. It is really sad how folks like you are so anxious to stomp all over her freshly dug grave.
Sylvia - you are so correct, it is up to us to raise hell and not be afraid to do it, too.
gordo - yeah, I noticed, it is good to know she still can get to them. I am sure she is smiling knowing she can get still get a rise out of them.
I am going to miss her too.
