Richard, you have a great point on how this culture does put a high value on personal autonomy but at the same time demands competition and "success." What nobody ever wants to question is the effects it causes.

In fact, after reading a little bit more about the whole NASA incident, it suddenly simplified into it is all about a disgruntle employee because he got a bad performance review. By framing it that way, it allows us disregard anything and get back to business as usual.

But the whole notion of "always being the best" will get to you sooner or later and it will drive you to the point of cracking. Especially, if you were considered top dog and suddenly lost your superstar status.

It was a superficial piece, but El Universal's NY corresponent, Wilberto Torre, wrote today about "rampage murderers" in the United States (I put a translation up at my website for those who can't read Spanish). Torre didn't notice the attempts to paint Cho as an "outsider" except in his pyschological isolation. What struck the Mexican writer was how common "rampage killers" are in our society.

Torre suggests the problem is a lack of a decent mental health care system, which may be part of it, but I'm wondering if this just isn't just a "typical American" crime -- the "rugged individualist" and "crazed loner" are just different facets of the same American character. But, while we pretend we are a nation of individualists, we enforce conformity. We're a culture that puts a high value on personal autonomy but at the same time demands competition and "success".

But, when faced with the "dark side" of those American traits, we want to make the offender an "other". There were attempts to make the Colombine HS shooters out to be gay, and at least one commentator has tried doing this with Cho. The fact that he's Korean-born makes it "easier" to stay in denial about those of us who crack up steering between the two sides of our culture.

I think (or hope) the "Know-Nothings" will be seen for what they are... stupid people looking for easy answers (oh, he was Korean, or an immigrant or "brown") but am very worried that we'll just stop asking questions once we buy into the simplistic explaination that the guy was mentally ill. And had a gun.

This has to be one of the best blog posts that I've ever read XP. I was really angry when on the day of the shooting people were already blaming immigrants, but this really substantiates the harm that was done. Thanks again.

Thanks y'all, when I heard that he was an immigrant and a minority, I just knew people were going to react this way. There are reports of an Asian backlash occurring that is being drowned out. I remember during the OK City bombing, the first thing people thought, it had to be them A' rabs, but when people found it was Timothy Mcveigh and and Terry Nichols, nobody said "you people" are all like. When Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold went on their shooting rampage, once again nobody said those two represent white America. Much of the discussion centered on the nature of high school cliques, subcultures and bullying.

Your right, Sylvia, people are slowly hold officials accountable, just wish it was giant steps instead of baby steps.

Excellent analysis. The media have gotten extremely reckless in reporting information of varying importance, but when it comes to really huge events like this tragedy, their snap assumptions and social conditioning really show its asses. The media-viewing public really needs to take these corporations to task about what they report and how they report it. I'm glad that people are slowly growing more accustomed to holding officials accountable. Baby steps, baby steps.

Anyway, thank you for this piece; it's a burst of fresh thinking.

Great analysis as usual, XP.

Sad, eh? Will we ever learn how to view things here? Or will we always resort to the kneejerk fear-based racist shit over and over again? How do we expect to move forward if we are still thinking like blunt objects?
