According to the LA Times that I linked to, it seems like the Sacramento community is the only enclave that is different from their Russian-speaking counterparts in the US. It also is the largest. I guess it would be like the old “chicken-egg” question.

Also troubling is the underlying message that one should adopt a certain type of behavior in the U.S. I admit I know nothing about Fijian culture (and damn little aboutRussian culture) , but wouldn’t be suprised if affection between men wasn’t considered “normal” in Fiji and “queer” in Russia.

I wrote about this (not nearly as well as I should) recently, based on the way sports teams are photographed in the U.S. and Latin America. Men in groups (like sports teams) don’t touch, where Latin team photos show the guys with their arms around each other.

Apparently, this fear of being seen as “queer” is fairly recent in U.S. culture, which makes me wonder. Did the Russians already hold these extreme fears, or have they been fostered by their religion and/or political backers?.

But, no matter how I try to “understnad” this, it’s still a hate crime, and should be treated as such.

Sylvia – thank you. I think the way Houston PD handled David’s case set precedence on how law enforcement can avoid labeling crimes such as these as hate crimes.

Thank you bfp. That is why I wanted to make sure I pointed that out when the links I inserted on how it is not only immoral, but unAmerican for a male to display any type of physical affection towards another male. It is not just a message to the LGBT community, but a reminder to us men of the consequences to any male behavior who try to buck society’s norms of masculinity.

xp, your investigative work never fails to amaze me. thanks for this post, all the backdrop historical stuff is so important to know–so important to include in any organizing efforts…and this all goes back to your post about masculinity–this is how men who don’t fall into the norms of masculinity are treated. it’s a freaking tragedy.

Thank you Vox. I don’t understand it either. How much more evidence do the authorities want? The group did call for backup, they were hurling homophobic slurs, what more do they want. It is frustrating.
