Gracias a la Vida: A Guest Post By Nezua
HOLA and good to see ya! My name is Nezua Limón Xolagrafik-Jonez and I can be found at The Unapologetic Mexican. Today I am guest posting for mi blogmigo, XP. Our host is away for a bit, as there has been a death in his familia. So, myself and a few amigos de XP and appreciators of this fine blogspace have agreed to fill in when possible, as we cannot let the blog go cold! That would never do.
I hope you aren’t too thrown off by the difference between my style and XP’s, and I will do all I can to respect his space. After all, I’m the one who made the banner for this snazzy blog! Let’s all take a moment to admire XP’s fine banner.
One more moment.
Okay, that’s good enough. Damn, you think you’d people have nothing better to do than sit around and admire my handiwork. (But it does say good things about you.)
I guess for myself, I’ve been thinking a lot this past couple weeks on mortality. Members of my own familia, especially the elder ones, who are still alive are nearer to the end of their arc than the beginning. Two of them are ill, or have sickness. Even my own mother’s health is worse than I ever remember in my life. I feel the chill of winter in the air where I live, and nearing 40, my body is not quite the titanium wonder that it once was. (I’m still made of steel, mostly, so don’t get any crazy ideas, vato.)
Death, and the temporary nature of our time here on esta planeta is not something we like to think about, except…sometimes we should. Because we don’t have forever. And if we keep that in mind, it can be easier to judge what is worth spending time on, taking seriously, giving heart to or ignoring. There are times in my own life that I have lived as if I had a million tomorrows and each one was expendable. But as the passing of XP’s abuelita reminds us, this is not true. No, not one bit. Each day is precious, unique, and none guaranteed. So let’s live each one as if it is a gift left on our doorstep that we don’t deserve, but are thrilled to have.
To celebrate this, and to honor mi amigo’s abuelita, let us kick it old school for a moment:
Gracias. I will see you again.—Nezua

XP: So sorry to hear about your abuelita. May her memory be a blessing to you, the rest of your family and everyone who knew and loved her.
Good to see you here, Nez. For me, I really started thinking about mortality in concrete terms after my daughter was born. That was the spark, and I’ve come to strive to reach that place you highlight - where I can appreciate every moment and focus on the truly important things in life. Not always easy, but always a worthy goal.
Agreed. Michael. As Stephen King said so well, we first see our tombstone when our first child is born. Jeje…a morbid way of putting it, but thats’ Stephen King. Mijo is now 19, amazingly. So it’s been a while for me, but I feel I’ve always had an unusual awareness of the impermanence of life. Don’t know why.
Anyway, yes. A good thing to strive for.
Good to see you.
Is Nezua Limón Xolagrafik-Jonez your real name? Including the holographic part? I figured it was a cool pseudonym.
