A New Year, A New Me
Hola amgios y amigas! Hope your New years went well. I am back from my whirl wind tour of my Texas vacation. Now I have to go through tons of emails, yuck. I hate to say it, but not having an Internet connection was nearly killing me. The only Internet connection I had was very limited, the limited amount of time, I had only allowed me to check my email and delete all the comment spam I ended up getting. Suffice to say that I think I ended up getting “internet withdrawal syndrome.” I need my internets …. lol.
Instead of staying at a hotel, I ended up sleeping at my paternal grandmother in Laredo. Boy did that bring back a lot of memories. I thought going back to Laredo would be hard since, the last time I went there was for my maternal grandmother’s funeral, but such was not the case.
Going to Laredo is always an experience. Not only does it remind me where I came from, but it also reminds me what I am fighting for as well. In this constant war on immigration, it has some how turned our border cities into demilitarized zones, however, many people deny this is actually taking place. What is currently taking place in Laredo and in other border cities is just a microcosm of what is really happening around us. The truth is, the world is all messed up. The nation is sick. There is trouble in this land. Moreover, there is confusion all around.
In this New Year, we will have another presidential election. The question we must ask ourselves, are we willing to fight for what we really believe in or will we once again accept the lies we are told. In truth, something is happening in our world. As masses of people around the world are rising up we continue sit in our homes. Furthermore, wherever they are assembled today, whether it is in Kenya, Latin America, Middle East or the immigrants here in the United States - the cry is always the same - The people want to be free from oppression.
We are being forced to a point where we’re going to have to grapple with the problems which is as old as time. Survival demands that we grapple with them. In the last two elections, we have talked about war and peace. But now, we no longer can just talk about it. It is no longer a choice between violence and nonviolence in this world; it’s nonviolence or nonexistence.
Something must be done in terms of human rights for the people of color, not just here in this country, but through out the world. If something isn’t done, the whole world is doomed.
There seems to be a lot strife going on right now. I have seen this strife divide our own Latino community. It is this type of divide that is the most dangerous. Where solidarity was once shown a few years ago are now being replaced with disputes of “quen es mas Latino/a.” It is this type of questioning that leads to mistrust. It is this type of thinking that is dangerous because it enslaves us into apathy. It leads us towards our own slaughter by coveting us to be entertained than being engaged. It is vital that we stay together and maintain unity.
We must engage ourselves in protest. Not only once, but engage ourselves in multiple protests in order to put the issue where it is supposed to be. We must force everybody to see that there are 11 to 12 million immigrants - God’s children - here suffering, sometimes going hungry, and going through dark and dreary nights wondering how things are going to come out. For when people get caught up with that which is right, and they are willing to sacrifice for it, there is no stopping point lacking victory.
We have to see it through. We must be concerned about our brothers and sisters. Either we go up together, or we go down together. The future lies in building a strong broad-based movement that comprises of liberal and revolutionary nationalists, socialists, union militants, church activists and idealist and visionaries. It is time to call for the unity against all orders of oppression, comprising class exploitation, racism, patriarchy, homophobia, anti-immigration prejudice and imperialism.
This is a New Year. And, in this New Year, I’m not going to be worried about the small stuff. I do not fear any person because they do not have any power over me. I DO NOT fear those with power and money. Those people are cowards, as they hide away in their ivory towers, and never come out to face WE THE PEOPLE.
This year I plan to add a little more salsa to my punch. All I ask of you is to join me. Let us rise up with a greater readiness. Let us stand with a greater determination. And let us move on in these powerful days, these days of challenge to make America what it ought to be.

XP–I just wanted to let you know that somebody emailed me a very sweet, very supportive email–and I think s/he did it as a result of your post (although I could be wrong). I want to thank you for the post and let you know that your words are being heard and they are producing action. Thank you so much–if this is the way our new year is going to be–I look forward to it with relish.

Wow, I don’t know what to say. I am sort of speechless at the moment really. Despite all the horrible things that are occurring here in the US, it is moments like these that provide me the motivation not to throw in the towel.
I too look forward to the coming year with you my friend.
I’m with you. All the way, bro!
Here’s to you and yours, and to a New Year FOR THE PEOPLE!
Hi I was reading about America’s cruelty history article it was cool, but i have a question. Do you think most immigrants are going to experience again this tragic time sometimes soon?.
Hi Giovanni! That is a very a good question. In my opinion, with the current anti-immigrant climate, I would say yes. The USA Today, just reported that ICE plans to 9 federal sources for more immigrants
We must keep in mind mass deportation tends to be used at times of economic downturns, the first one occurred during The Great Depression and the second one occurred during the Post-Korean War Recession. Are we in a recession? According to the media economic experts, they continue to say we are not. But as hard as the media pundits are trying to put a spin on our current econmic situation, it is hard to deny that our economy is in trouble. The jobless rate rose to 5 percent in December, the highest in two years. There is even some talk among investors that the economy is heading for one of the worst recessions we’ve had in a while.
I hate to say it, but mass deportation an unspoken strategy for moving an economy out of a recession.
