Hi there !

Thank you for these valuables informations, i got some more good books to read (i hope there's french translations of his books as i've never dare to read a whole book in english,o)
Till' tonight i wasn't aware that the characters of "fear and loathing in Las Vagas" by T.Gilliam were true.
What a ...bloody good surprise.
I wasn't aware neither of the necessity of his struggle for the "chicano" community.
It's no excuses, i just didn't know.
On my side of the atlantic ocean american culture is quite limited to what perspire from the "star and stripes banner" , which i should confess got a lot of detractors around here (France) not necesarily based on true facts.
I wish that this community will overcome the stupid and useless so called "white power".
I hope that my english hasn't me made too much misinterpretations and more that you'll understand what i tried to say.
Thanks again, i'll soon search for his books.
Please apologise my poor english.

A true Amercian Legend, and smart Attorney by any LSAT or State Bar Exam.

He left a legacy, if you read all available the message is so clear. To bad that english speaking Canadians can not rise to the challenge he championed all to be.

A truly great representative of all that is right.

back in 1994, iwasdoing research on Acosta's connections to the Brown berets from Laredo, Texas who were blown up in a car accident in Colorado. a few days after starting to ask questions of family members and friends of the dead, the Feds came knocking on my door

Hola, hermano - I've been out of touch these past few months - the surgery went well and I'm more or less still kicking.

Last October a couple of friends and I (silly old goats all}
managed to bring Carlos Montes to El Paso. He gave a powerpoint lecture-presentation at UTEP regarding the Chicano movement and the Brown Berets, of which, as you know, he was a principal founder. Over the weekend that he was here, he met with old friends and supporters. It was really nice. He is now an immigration activist, having moved on from being a union organizer. As a matter of fact, I received the following e-mail not too long ago:

"Fight Back News Service | www.fightbacknews.org

Detroit conference to build unity for immigrant rights

Commentary by Carlos Montes

Los Angeles, CA - The battle is on. Attacks against immigrants are intensifying. There is an upturn in ICE raids, mass detentions and deportations. Jailing, beatings and killings by police and ICE agents continue, with hate crimes against Mexicans on the rise.

Unite to Struggle

We must unite all progressive forces in a united front to beat back these attacks and again take back the offensive to win complete legalization for all immigrants and end the war in Iraq. We call on all pro-immigrant rights and progressive organizations to join us for a national unity conference on Feb. 223, 2008 in Detroit, Michigan.

Plan of Action

At this conference we will unite on a plan of action for mass national mobilizations in major cities for May 1, 2008. Without struggle there will be no victories. We will not wait for a change in politicians; our people demand an end to the attacks now and legalization! We do not have the luxury of waiting for another administration while families are being torn apart by deportations.

We know that the masses are the real makers of history and by uniting and mobilizing the masses we will change history. We are living in a time of crisis, with wars, recessions and racist attacks and it is during critical times that major changes take place. Lets all be part of making history and join us in Detroit, to build unity and a plan of action on Feb. 22-23, 2008. The conference is organized by the National May 1st Movement for Worker and Immigrant Rights.

Carlos Montes is a veteran fighter in the Chicano Liberation movement, a founder of the Brown Berets and the Chicano Moratorium. He is a leader in the March 25th Coalition and Latinos Against War, both based in East Los Angeles, California. For more information contact: www.latinoscontralaguerra.org

Carlos was born in Juarez, across the charco from El Paso, but was raised in LA. When he was indicted after the Biltmore fire, he came to El Paso, where he lived under a different name for several years before returning to California. He was arrested, and was jailed for a couple of months before the trial, where Oscar made mincemeat of the prosecution.

It is Carlos' memory, as well as that of several of us, that Oscar was also born in Juarez. Matter of fact, it is a point of pride locally that arguably two of the biggest names in the Chicano movement in LA were from Juarez.

Personally, I've never checked out where Oscar was born but have always accepted the fact that the family was from Juarez, and lived briefly in EP before moving west. At the time, it was tough for Mexicans who lived in EP. Two of my deceased uncles also left for LA at about the time, which would have been beginning during the depression years.

In any event, thank you for remembering Oscar so well.
