What does the word Xicano mean to me?
It’s about thinking for myself,
setting my mind free.
Challenging everything I was taught,
analyzing my beliefs and every thought.
Knowledge and wisdom,
that for which I yearn,
taking advantage of any opportunity
where there is a lesson to learn.
Strengthening my mind day by day,
my underlying values and principles
I will not betray
Realizing what really matters in this place and time,
look deep inside me,
a sell-out you will not find.
Expressing myself whenever and however I can,
trying to send a message,
taking a stand.
Remembering my past and those who came before,
serving my comunidad and holding open doors
to my sisters and brothers trying to succeed,
surrounded by a racist nation
and a society run by greed.
So here I stand,
with Aztlan in sight,
the struggle rages on
I will continue to fight.
A better tomorrow for a further generations,
soon enough,
we will have our nation.
