Houston Comets: Thanks For The Memories
One of Houston’s sports franchise is no more. I was sadden to hear this morning that the Houston Comets, which won the first four consecutive championships, from 1997-2000, will be dissolved by the Women’s National Basketball Association.
The WNBA president says the franchise that won the league’s first four championships is disbanding. Donna Orender told Houston television station KRIV on Monday that the league-owned Houston Comets would be shut down because new owners couldn’t be found.
I remember when the WNBA formed back in 1996 when the NBA Board of Governors approved the creation of the league. Sadly, the organization that created the league destroyed it.
The most memorable season was in 1999 that was led by the Big Three, (Sheryl Swoopes, Cynthia Cooper and Tina Thompson). They had dedicated their championship season to Kim Perrot, who died of cancer.
Leslie Alexander, also owner of the Houston Rockets, was the original owner of the Comets, but sold it to a furniture store owner Hilton Koch. The guy tried, he tried to give away tickets if somebody bought furniture. He ended up losing over 4 million dollars since buying the Comets. If the economy was not what it was, I would bet it could have been a success.
To the former Houston Comets, thanks for the memories. The Comets will always be number 1 in my heart.

This is a sad chapter (unfortunately one of many) for Houston sports, and a sad day for women’s sports.
I agree. I think our local media was part of their downfall, they stopped covering them like they did in the late 90s, and if they did, it was always done in passing; especially, once Houston was awarded a NFL team and the Astros and Rockets started winning.
