Marco Rubio, A Crossover Success

Making the rounds in the Latinosphere is former Florida House Speaker and Republican senatorial candidate Marco Rubio and his take on President Ronald Reagan’s immigration policy.

I don’t know if I want to hang my head in shame or die laughing at the irony of it all. One thing is for sure, I am awarding Marco Rubio the “Crossover King” Award.

What is “Crossover King” Award you ask? The award is inspired from one of the Latino characters John Leguizamo plays in Mambo Mouth. Leguizamo plays the role of the “Crossover King,” a formerly “flamboyant” Latino, “loud and obnoxious, full of street mannerisms,” who has now achieved success in the corporate world. In short, crossing over is “the art of passing for someone that you are not in order to get something that you have not.” For part two click here.

Congratulations Marco Rubio, your a crossover success. Let’s face it, it’s tough growing up Latino in this country. We’re a third class citizen from the word go and I applauded you on your success. But there is a reason why John Leguizamo said “Latins for Republicans — it’s like roaches for Raid.”

5 words … Alberto Gonzales and Mel Martinez. And the word is, the wolves are already circling.

Mambo Mouth aired in 1991 on HBO. On the show, Leguizamo also played the role of Pepe, a detained “illegal immigrant.” It seems like nothing has changed since then when it comes to racism and Latinos pulling up that ladder behind them once they succeed.

In the skit, Pepe first denies he is a Latino, and then endeavors to ingratiate himself with the Latino prison guard. When these attempts fail, he denounces the guard as a “coconut – brown on the outside, white on the inside,” and launches into a rant about the plight of undocumented immigrants and American ignorance about their indispensable role in society, asserting, “I’m doing the shit jobs that Americans don’t want.” Something Marco Rubio really take to heart.

I think that there’s something you quite don’t understand. Marco Rubio has next to nothing in common with an undocumented mestizo laborer illegally crossing the border. First of all, Marco Rubio is clearly of pure European ancestry, so chances are that he hasn’t suffered the racism that latinos of color suffer such as profiling by policemen, being followed around stores, being given dirty looks for no reason other than being a latino in the wrong place, etc.. He looks like what he is, a white European man, and therefore he fits in to white society. If he were walking down the street, I assure you that most people would not even know that he’s latino, they would think that he’s just a plain white guy, period. So, why do you expect him to somehow empathize with the plight of “latinos?” Marco is not brown on the outside and white on the inside, he’s white on the outside, and white on the inside. Period.

One thing I cannot stand is un latino odiando ser latino. That is how I look at Marco, he is not only against illegal immigration but he wants latinos to stop coming to this country. legally or not.

Ray a name like Marco Rubio is not a Pure European, he is Cuban and quit posting like you are not being paid to change public opinion.

    Jonathan,

What do you mean that a “name” like “Marco Rubio” is not pure European? What is it then? Spain is a European country. There are thousands of pure Europeans with names like Rubio, Sanchez, Rodriquez and Gomez, etc…

Being Cuban and European is not mutually exclusive. Just like being European and Mexican is not mutually exclusive either. Just put on the Spanish channel and look at all of the blond Mexican actors. By the way, Marco Rubio is clearly of pure European ancestry. You can tell just by looking at his features. There is nothing even remotely mulatto or mestizo looking about him.

How is it that people can’t grasp that Hispanic is not a race? You take someone like Cameron Diaz and Celia Cruz, and tell me how can they be the same race?? Do people even know what race means? Does Rubio look like many of the poor dark skin Mexicans you see at construction sites??? He has European features becuase he has European ancestry. White European ancestry. Stop trying to create bogus divisions. Nuff said.
