The most striking thing about our national debate over immigration is the utter lack of attention to the root causes of mass migration from Mexico or to the moral dimensions of the injustice and human tragedy that is unfolding before our eyes. There comes a point where turning away from violence, and not standing up to it, is worse than appeasement: It’s active encouragement. So it is time to take off the kid gloves and roll up your sleeves and break through the collective delusion mentality that now embraces (some might say constitutes) the far Right.

I am tired of the relentless lies and meanness of special pleading right-wingers whose cloying candy coating can hardly conceal the poison pill inside and unfortunately, there are many people who uncritically accept any sort of mental dandruff people shake off their heads. Yesterday, a request came my way by GayPatriot to “confirm” if Daniel Maldonado, Editor and Publisher of Aztlan Electronic News was the same Daniel Maldonado (aka Daniel Aljughaifi) who was recently arrested for training with Al-Qaeda to become a terrorist bomber.

Well, la de friken da, give this man a prize. Do you actually think that every Tomas, Pablo, and Enrique you see and hear on the news are all the same? Just because you can do a simple Google search, it gives you the right to say “Gotcha!” All it shows is that you and your ilk, the Lou Dobbs, the Pat Buchanans, the Bill O’Reillys, the Michele Malkins have only one intent and that is to harm anybody who is Brown. I think George Carlin had it right when he said “If You’re Brown, You’re Goin Down! … You got some brown people in your country? Tell ‘em to watch the fuck out, or we’ll goddamn bomb them!” And in this case, we’ll deport your ass.

In order for the right wing to sustain their collective delusion, it seems, they must make shit up. For people who disliked the former Soviet Union, they really do enjoy using old Stalinistic tactics to get rid of their perceived enemies by tarring every opponent with broad accusation all for the “public good.” What do Latino immigrants have to do with Al-Qaeda? The answer is nothing at all! However, this is the same mental crap that is being peddled by the right-wing talking heads.

However, this is not new. These are the same tactics that have used by [tag]John Tanton[/tag], of [tag]US English[/tag] and Federation for American Immigration Reform ([tag]FAIR[/tag]), who planted the seed for English only movement that began in the 1980s; and [tag]Glenn Spencer[/tag], of the [tag]American Patrol[/tag], who planted the seed for La [tag]Reconquista[/tag] fable – the alleged plot to turn several American states into a Mexican state or some kind of puppet government controlled by Mexico – that started in the 1990s.

The gist of the [tag]anti-immigrant[/tag] sentiment is that the newcomers are up to no good, they just want a handout, they have too many babies and they are hell-bent on contaminating our precious bodily fluids and, besides, you wouldn’t want your daughter to date one. In fact, the whole anti-immigrant sentiment is starting to turn out to be anti-Brown, where some state are creatively coming up with “anybody but Brown folk” laws.

So this time, their sole argument is based on a Nationalistic pride, which they strike their chest on the mountain top proclaiming, “This is Amerikkka! Secure the borders from the Brown menace!!” That is why it is imperative to construct the new right-wing boogeyman through a shell game that allows them to find anything “INTERESTING,” no matter how obscure, that could connect “the [tag]Latino Boogieman[/tag]” and the [tag]Aztlán[/tag] movement to Al-Qaeda. Like Michele Malkin who has repeatedly TRIED to link migrant farmers or starving family members to those people who flew the planes on 9/11. There isn’t any sinister conspiracy, the true villains are “ethnic bosses” who keep their people in bondage.

Despite all the discussion about civility, the right wing relies on forms of violence, whether verbal, implied or actual. For many people this appears to be the appeal: a way for the otherwise inadequate to act like solid guys, their violence safely done at a distance and by proxy. One of the right-wings favorite tactics is manufacturing plots, which serves them well as a weapon to attack its “enemies.” This is done so they can avoid having to debate the issues and incite fear in their audiences.

One can find a laundry list of right wing militarists who have adopted this type of tough talk attitude, however, they are the least willing to accept the consequences for it, much less place themselves at risk. The leading targets of such rhetoric have been [tag]undocumented immigrants[/tag] from leading pundits as Michele Malkin, Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh to name a few.

Even the most marginal member of the right-wing echo chamber does their part not only selling the lies, but also making a hash of American politics, the rule of law and the expression of simple decency. Therefore, it is not a surprise to find on the net the use of eliminationist rhetoric among right-wing bloggers, such as GayPatriot.

Back in 2005, GayPatriot embarrassed himself by beginning to believe his own fantasy of right-wing shit-talking strength. Within the confines of his own site, he can do and say whatever he pleases. Apparently, GayPatriot tried to engage in some form of thuggish behavior by labeling two activists and bloggers, Mike Rogers (BlogActive) and John Aravosis (Americablog), as “Gay Terrorists.” On a post entitled “WANTED: GAY TERRORISTS,” with photos of Rogers and Aravosis, GayPatriot wrote:

Wanted for crimes against the gay community. Wanted for repeatedly conducting outing witch hunts against gays who do not believe in radical liberal anti-American ideals. For repeated violations of privacy of gay Americans. For conducting systematic civil liberties attacks on gay Americans.

WANTED! Let’s do something about these gay terrorists who have infected our community with their hatred and self-loathing bigotry of gay Americans who wish to live their lives in peace.

It was all fun and games until Michael Rogers called GayPatriot’s place of employment immediately following the post and spoke to GayPatriot’s secretary and boss. Rogers said he asked GayPatriot to remove the post and replace it with a post about non-violence or he would launch a national boycott of GayPatriot’s corporate employer and pursue all avenues necessary to protect himself. Rogers call to GayPatriot’s employer put an end to that nonsense, the post was removed and GayPatriot temporarily stepped away from the blogosphere.

However, that does not mean he stopped engaging in thuggish intimidation. It really is not a surprise to find more eliminationism rhetoric on GayPatriot’s site, this time targeting Maldanado.

They should put this guy in front of a firing squad at Ground Zero in NYC.

Its people like these who expect us to say “Si, Señor” while licking their boots, and not speak unless spoken to! But the minute we do stand up for ourselves, we are demonized, slandered, libeled, the same way the Iraqis were right before going to war, all to make themselves look like the “good guys,” the true American Patriot, in fact, they are nothing but a wolf under the a fine suit, with a bag of tricks. They want us to believe how GRATEFUL we should be to live here in Amerikkka, and how we should feel GOOD about licking the boots of our masters. That is why xenophobic jackbooted racist repeat the same Republican meme on how America has given us everything and all we are to take and give nothing back.

Well, I am fed up with the sheer venom and rage that is displaced on the Latino community. Call it “shrill” or “unhinged,” the truth is, it is the same rage that permits their followers to practice [tag]eliminationism[/tag], where they have no qualms about shooting them all up while letting God sort out their mess. The right isn’t afraid of the occasional incredibly dumb and horrible act by some otherwise political opponent. What they fear is justice.

Sabes que GayPatriot, I refuse to be anybody’s “Si, Señor Spic” for some racist prick to kick around. I have contributed as much blood, sweat, and tears, and money, as any person, only to see clever and greedy bastards from your Party squander it away in your murderous wars.

It is time to demand justice NOW and say NO to poverty, to substandard schools and housing, to inferior wages and shit jobs, to old and new-fashioned discrimination, to Driving while Black, Mexican, or Puerto Rican. NO to apocalyptic fantasies of political demagogues and the depraved appeals of right-wing pundits, [tag]white supremacists[/tag] and bigots, even if it’s found wearing a “progressive” disguise, who seek to inflame racial passions.

The gloves are off, cabron!

Amidst of the current top story, other stories have flown under the radar. It seems that Englishnistas have done it again. In New Jersey, by a vote 4 to 2, Bogota’s city council has authorized, [tag]Steve Lonegan[/tag], Bogota’s conservative and outspoken Republican mayor, to write a letter urging McDonald’s to take down it’s billboard that advertises iced coffee in Spanish. He is also for his citizens to boycott McDonald’s if they refuse to take down it’s sign.

The mayor of a small Bergen County town is calling for a McDonald’s boycott if the fast-food chain does not take down a Spanish-language billboard advertising iced coffee.

His angst against the ad being done in Spanish is that McDonald’s is sending a message to Spanish-speaking immigrants that they don’t need to learn English. In fact, Lonegan, has characterized the billboard as a “racial profiling marketing campaign.”

For most Americans, racism is viewed only white supremacist organizations, KKK, and other similar organizations like them. What does race have to do with language, after all? Is it racist to suggest that immigrants need to learn English to prosper in this country? What’s wrong with encouraging them to enter the mainstream rather than remain apart?

Although, these are reasonable questions it really diverts from the the real issue, racism is a matter of group power; it is about a dominant racial group (whites) striving to maintain its systemic advantages and minorities fighting to subvert the racial status quo.

Whereas the principles liberalism and humanism were used to argue equality in the past, the Englishnistas are now using it as their the main rhetorical weapons to justify contemporary racial inequality. Many conservatives use these principles in an abstract way that allows them to support the racial status quo in an apparently “reasonable” fashion. After receiving criticism Mayor Lonegan explained his opposition to the to the McDonald’s ad in meritocratic fashion:

He said the borough welcomes Hispanics and is proud of its diversity. But he added that the English language is the common thread that ties residents together and that the Spanish-language billboard undermines that notion.

“For every one of those people there’s 10 people that are proud we’re standing up for this,” the mayor said.

In [tag]Eduardo Bonilla-Silva[/tag]’s “The [tag]Linguistics[/tag] of Color Blind Racism: How to Talk Nasty about Blacks without Sounding ‘Racist’” [PDF], Bonilla-Silva argues that his color blind rhoteric has become the new contemporary racetalk.

Mayor Lonegan, is not the only one contemplating this action. There’s a surprising unanimity among white folks across party lines when it comes to attacks on the use of race as a concept, that is coming from liberalism and from the left. One of the hallmarks the [tag]Democratic Leadership Council[/tag] ([tag]DLC[/tag]) is the effort to move the Democratic Party further to the right. In doing so, this attempt has consequences, it will marginalize the inequities of both minorities and the poor all in the name of appeals for “universal” programs. Meanwhile [tag]immigration[/tag] reform and [tag]bilingualism[/tag] have become a bipartisan bloodsport.

Recently, the Congressional Education and Workforce Committee held one of their “field hearings” regarding immigration reform. The purpose of the was to investigate the role of English in the US.

What is the role of English in American education and society, and does the Reid-Kennedy bill undermine, rather than encourage, this role?

This is not the first time the [tag]Englishnistas[/tag] had a crack at Congress.

History of the [tag]English Only Movement[/tag]
Englishnista movement first bagan in 1981 when US English spearheaded the constitutional English Language Amendment. If passed, the proposal would have banned virtually all uses of languages other than English by federal, state, and local governments. By 1988, all but two of the fifty states had at least considered legislation to declare English their official language – most of them in response to lobbying by US English.

However, Englishnistas hit a brick wall when people found out the true motives behind their plan. In 1988, the Arizona Republic published excerpts of a confidential memo from the anti-immigration leader [tag]John Tanton[/tag]. The memo was the seed that planted the idea of the [tag]Reconquista[tag] movement. The memo discussed the importance of defending “our common language” because of the “threat” of a Hispanic takeover. Unless something was done, it warned, the US would face a Hispanic takeover through immigration and high birthrates:

Gobernar es poblar translates “to govern is to populate.” In this society where the majority rules, does this hold? Will the present majority peaceably hand over its political power to a group that is simply more fertile? … Can homo contraceptivus compete with homo progenitiva [sic] if borders aren’t controlled? Or is advice to limit one’s family simply advice to move over and let someone else with greater reproductive powers occupy the space? … Perhaps this is the first instance in which those with their pants up are going to get caught by those with their pants down!
…
How will we make the transition from a dominant non-Hispanic society with a Spanish influence to a dominant Spanish society with a non-Hispanic influence? … As Whites see their power and control over their lives declining, will they simply go quietly into the night? Or will there be an explosion? … We’re building in a deadly disunity. All great empires disintegrate, we want stability.

The memo was a frank revival of the theory of “race suicide.”

Make no mistake, US English may act as it’s only purpose is a language issue. US English is the sister organization to Federation for American Immigration Reform ([tag]FAIR[tag]), the organization that deals with the immigration issue. Tanton went off to start FAIR, determined, as he later recalled, to defy “the taboo that in 1979 proscribed discussion of the immigration issue.”

[tag]US English[/tag] and FAIR are kept separate because it is a tactical matter. To charge linguistic minorities with refusing to assimilate and simultaneously to propose limiting their numbers smacked of ethnic intolerance, a return to the old [tag]nativism[/tag]. It would reveal an impolitic analysis – shared by several (though not all) leaders of FAIR and U.S. English – that the problem was not merely the quantity of new immigrants, but the quality: too many Hispanics.

Tanton had written the paper for a private study group drawn principally from U.S. English, FAIR, and allied organizations. He dubbed it [tag]WITAN[/tag], after the Old English witenagemot, or council of wise men to advise the king.

Insecurity And Resentment
For groups like English Only, FAIR, Center for Equal Opportunity, Center for Immigration Studies, Council of Conservative Citizens, among other Immigration Reform and Language Restrictionism advocates they have one target in particular: that amalgam of imperial and indigenous traditions, incorporating Castilian, Galician, Moorish, Aztec, Mayan, Taino, and West African elements, known loosely as “Hispanic.” Not that [tag]nativists[/tag] indulge in such fine distinctions. What concerns WITAN is a monolithic set of bad habits that it deems inimical to the American experiment: a “Latin” psychology that breeds underdevelopment, antisocial behavior, authoritarianism, educational failure, overpopulation, and of course, bilingualism. This is an updated version of the Black Legend. The villains are no longer ruthless conquistadores, but “ethnic bosses” who keep their people in bondage.

If the language was really the issue, they must look to their leader to blame to the decline of English. It was Dudya’s “No Child left Behind Act,” that ended Title VII, the Bilingual Education Act that encouraged “developing the English language skills” of children but also “to the extent possible, the native language skills.” The Act began in 1968 under Lyndon Johnson, and was renewed by all four Republicans, three Democrats before him. The new law disregards any instruction in any language other than English.

The Englishnista argument is only based on a Nationalist pride which is why they beat their chest proclaiming “This is Amerikkka! That’s the Amerikkkan way.” Proclaiming English the national language will not unify this country, it will only divide it even further than it already is. The left was capable a decade ago of dissecting such a shell game, but now they contribute to the fear of the brown menace – The Latino Boogieman.

Modern racial ideology does not thrive on the ugliness of the past, on the language and tropes typical of slavery and Jim Crow. Today, their language is a sanitized to justify keeping minorities out of the good things in life with the language of liberalism (“I am all for equal opportunity; that’s why I oppose affirmative action!”). Today’s Englishnistas do not feel guilty about a minorities’ plight because they simply believe if minorities are not succeeding it’s because they are not trying hard enough.

I know I will receive criticisms from conservative and liberal Englishnistas alike, which they will rebuke with statements such as “You are hypersensitive.” or “Just because I start disagreeing with you, you start calling out ‘racism!’” Well, good! This post is meant to confront the [tag]color blind[/tag] nonsense from within. The collective denial about the true nature of race relations may help them feel good, but it is also one of the greatest obstacles for them to do the right thing. My aim is to provoke, trigger Englishnistas and to expose themselves for who they truly are and counter their abstract liberal bullshit with concrete liberal positions based on a realistic understanding of racial matters and a concern with achieving racial equality.

It is time to demand equality NOW! We must say “NO” to poverty, to substandard schools and housing, to inferior wages and shit jobs, to old and new fashioned discrimination, to Driving While Black, Mexican, or Puerto Rican.

“HELL, NO” to second class citizenship in America. Only by demanding what seems impossible now, will we be able to make true equality possible in the near future.

Viva La Raza!
